Estate 1940 (Summer 1940)

On June 10, 1940, Italy, allied with Nazi Germany, officially entered the war. That same summer, far from the front lines, the stazzo of Colle Civita was established in the Maiella mountains—a complex system of dry-stone enclosures built to shelter herds overnight during the high-altitude summer phase of transhumance, the ancient pastoral practice of moving livestock seasonally between lowland and mountain pastures.
Estate 1940 (Summer 1940) focuses on the more insular and antisocial dimension of transhumance, interpreting it as a radical refusal to participate in the war and an escape from historical time in favor of a cyclical and recurring temporality, marked by the rhythm of the seasons.
The drawing is a full-scale 1:1 reproduction of a diorama of Colle Civita currently housed in the Museo delle Genti d’Abruzzo in Pescara.

Il 10 giugno del 1940, l’Italia, alleata della Germania nazista, entra ufficialmente in guerra.
La stessa estate, lontano dalle zone di conflitto, viene creato lo stazzo di Colle Civita sui monti della Maiella. Si tratta di un complesso sistema di muri a secco per contenere le varie mandrie peril pernottamento in quota nella fase estiva della transumanza.
Estate 1940 guarda all’aspetto più insulare della transumanza, come a un rifiuto radicale di adesione alla guerra e una fuga dal tempo storico, in favore di un tempo ciclico e ricorsivo, scandito dal ritmo delle stagioni.
Il disegno è la fedele riproduzione in scala 1:1 del diorama di Colle Civita oggi conservato nel Museo delle Genti d’Abruzzo a Pescara.
