Real Chernobyl attempts to reconstruct the events and movements of Thomas Garenq, the man who sold the first videos of the Chernobyl disaster to the American TV networks ABC and NBC. The images produced by Garenq were soon revealed to be a fake filmed on the outskirts of Trieste.
In an attempt to trace Thomas Garenq, the video retraces the locations of his fabrication: the health complex of Cattinara, the Melara district, and the hotel rooms in downtown Trieste where Garenq stayed and negotiated with the American television networks.
It is one of the first summers of the climate emergency, with TV networks airing the series Chernobyl, and the forests beginning to burn.

Real Chernobyl tenta di ricostruire le vicende e i movimenti di Thomas Garenq, l’uomo che ha ven- duto alle tv americane ABC e NBC i primi video del disastro di Chernobyl. Le immagini prodotte da Garenq si rivelarono presto un falso girato nella per- iferia di Trieste.
Nel tentativo di rintracciare Thomas Garenq, il video ripercorre i luoghi del suo falso: l’acropo- li sanitaria di Cattinara, il quadrilatero di Melara, fino alle camere d’albergo del centro di Trieste dove Garenq soggiornò e tenne le trattative con le televi- sioni americane.
È l’estate dell’emergenza climatica, delle tv che trasmettono la serie ‘Chernobyl’ e delle foreste che iniziano a bruciare.
